My name is Elena, and I am the creative force behind Humble Salve. I live, work, and play in Oakland, California, which I have been proud to call my home for over a decade. For my entire life I have been blessed (cursed?) with sensitive, finicky skin that rejected conventional beauty products with a vengeance. I spent all of my post-puberty teens and my early and mid-20s with constant breakouts, skin rashes, clogged pores, and overall head-to-toe unhappy skin. After investing years and countless dollars on dermatologists, prescription skin products, and copious amounts of research and self-education, I finally decided to try a natural skin care route and gave chemicals and "miracle skin fixes" the boot. I began incorporating more and more all-natural body care products into my skin care regime, and loved how great it made my skin look and feel. A few years ago I began to use exclusively all natural skin care products!
After buying various all natural products I realized that I continued to be sensitive to added scents and essential oils, but struggled to find high quality natural skin care goodies that did not have these additives. I wanted to have even more control of what went on my body and began playing around with making my own body care products in my home studio. I also fantasized about creating a body care line that was effective, luxurious, practical, and unscented but also made of the best ingredients possible (organic, raw, unrefined, sustainably sourced).
After approximately one year of intensive research and development that included a LOT of fine tuning to fit my stringent quality requirements (the right absorbency, texture, consistency, moisture level, convenience factor) I came out with my flagship product, my Hand Salve, followed by my Shea-Coconut Lip Balm. As more time went on, I was able to create more products that I wanted to see out there in the world of handmade body care products. It is also very important for me to package and distribute my products using 100% recyclable and / or compostable materials, and to offer gender-neutral designs and applications for use.
